Hotel Rwanda
Amnesty International is proud to be supporting the Oscar-nominated film Hotel Rwanda. This important and timely new film tells the story of Paul Rusesabagina, a Hutu man who saved the lives of over 1,000 Tutsis during the Rwandan genocide of 1994 - an humanitarian nightmare that claimed the lives of over 800,000 people and created a refugee crisis affecting more than 3 million others.
As an organization that has been defending and promoting human rights for over four decades, Amnesty International believes that this kind of socially relevant filmmaking is important not only in terms of educating audiences about human rights, but also in preventing genocide in other parts of the world (such as Sudan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo). This is why we are encouraging our nearly two million members to support this film.
We commend Terry George, A. Kitman Ho, Don Cheadle, Sophie Okonedo, Joaquin Pheonix, Nick Nolte, and everyone involved in this cinematic achievement. We also applaud MGM/UA, for distributing such a poignant and powerful film.
